Background of the study
Articulatory phonetics examines how speech sounds are produced through coordinated movements of the vocal apparatus. In Nigerian drama performances, particularly among Yoruba actors, precise articulation is crucial for effective communication and audience engagement (Adeniyi, 2023). Yoruba drama, steeped in rich cultural traditions, relies on expressive delivery and accurate phonetic production to convey emotion and narrative nuance. Actors’ mastery of articulatory mechanisms, including tongue placement, lip movement, and breath control, enhances the clarity and impact of their performance. Recent studies highlight that professional training in articulatory phonetics can significantly improve stage delivery and overall performance quality (Ibrahim, 2024). This study evaluates the articulatory phonetics employed by Yoruba actors in drama performances by analyzing video recordings and conducting acoustic measurements. It aims to document the specific articulatory strategies used and assess their effectiveness in achieving desired communicative outcomes. By integrating both qualitative and quantitative data, the research will contribute to improved training methods for actors and offer insights for linguists interested in the intersection of performance and phonetics (Chinwe, 2025).

Statement of the problem
Despite the importance of articulatory precision in drama, there is limited research on the specific phonetic strategies employed by Yoruba actors. Variability in articulatory performance may lead to inconsistencies in speech clarity and affect audience comprehension (Adeniyi, 2023). The lack of systematic evaluation of articulatory features in dramatic performance hinders the development of effective training protocols and the refinement of acting techniques. This study aims to address these gaps by documenting and evaluating articulatory phonetic practices among Yoruba actors in Nigerian drama.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To document articulatory phonetic features in Yoruba drama performance.
  2. To analyze the effectiveness of these features in communication.
  3. To propose training enhancements for improved articulation.

Research questions:

  1. What articulatory strategies are employed by Yoruba actors?
  2. How do these strategies affect speech clarity?
  3. What training interventions can enhance articulatory precision?

Research hypotheses:

  1. Articulatory precision improves performance quality.
  2. Specific phonetic features correlate with better audience comprehension.
  3. Targeted training can reduce articulatory variability.

Significance of the study (100 words):
This study is significant as it evaluates articulatory phonetics in Nigerian drama, offering insights to improve actor training and enhance performance quality. The findings will benefit drama educators and linguistic researchers interested in applied phonetics (Adeniyi, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to Yoruba drama performances in Nigeria and focuses on articulatory phonetics through video and acoustic analysis.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Articulatory Phonetics: The study of how speech sounds are physically produced.
  2. Drama Performance: A live theatrical presentation.
  3. Yoruba Actors: Performers who use the Yoruba language in drama.
